Who are you, and why are you in Nashville?
I was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa and spent most of my youth playing sports, camping in the various wildlife reserves and playing guitar in a loud, wonderfully obnoxious grunge band. I moved to Nashville in 2004 to attend Belmont University, where I pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Music Business and Accounting.
After graduating, I moved to Knoxville where I completed my Master of Accountancy and CPA at the University of Tennessee, followed by a four-year stint as an auditor at Ernst & Young in Atlanta, GA.
While in Atlanta, I met the love of my life, Heather, a Nashville native, and we moved back to Music City after getting married in 2015. Before applying for the GM position at Climb Nashville, I worked as an analyst at Sony/ATV Music Publishing where I was responsible for financial planning & analysis for North America.
Why do you climb?
I owe my passion and love for climbing to Climb Nashville. Shortly after moving into our home in Sylvan Park, my wife and I wanted to pursue a new endeavor together, one that was adventurous and fostered a healthy lifestyle. Three years ago, on a whim, we purchased a membership at Climb Nashville and it quickly became an important part of our daily lives.
I climb because I love the physical, mental and emotional challenges that this unique sport provides and I strongly identify with the amazing climbing community which is filled with people living their lives with passion, positivity and a deep respect for the environment.
Do you have a favorite route outside?
One of my goals/dreams is to return to South Africa with my family and friends to explore the plethora of spectacular routes at Waterval Boven.
What's rad about your life right now, on or off the wall?
On the wall, I am having an absolute blast participating in Climb Nashville’s Boulder League with my team “Atticus Pinch”. A BIG shout-out to our route setters who are, as always, doing an amazing job setting fun and challenging problems that push our limits and make us stronger climbers! The psyche is high and the comradery amongst the teams competing has been fantastic. I am definitely looking forward to the Top Rope League in the Fall!
Off the wall, I am beyond blessed with the most incredible family which recently grew with the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Harlyn Nova. She’s almost 8 months old and she brings nothing but love, pure joy, and laughter into our lives (but admittedly, a lot less sleep). She’s so cool it blows my mind! One of Harlyn’s favorite past times is to hang out on the boulder pads at the gym and giggle at Mom and Dad flailing on problems.
